Free Sheet Music from Arden Wilken

One of the biggest issues facing sight-readers is having enough sheet music on hand to develop sight-reading skills. If you constantly buy new sheet music just to have something to sight-read, you will find this quickly becomes expensive. Fortunately, in the digital age options for freely available sheet music are abundant, especially on the well-known IMSLP website.

However, outside of the larger public domain sites, more contemporary composers sometimes offer free sheet music on their websites. One such person is Arden Wilken. Her music is unique in that she writes music for therapeutic purposes. This music facilitates transforming the listener’s emotions into beneficial states of well-being.

Arden’s website, https://www.innersoundonline.com/albums, offers a free PDF download of sheet music for “Rainbows (for inner peace)”. The link to this specific sheet music is listed at the end of this blog. “Rainbows” is approximately at the early intermediate level, meaning it is not that advanced, but its difficulties are beyond the beginning stages.

When I first sight-read “Rainbows,” I noticed that the physical gestures felt graceful, flowing, and dance-like. Although the textures are thin, the music still conveys strong emotions that speak directly to the heart. The ending is particularly interesting as the pedal is to be held until all of the sound fades away.

Curious about the physical aspects of “Rainbows,” I asked Arden if she had thought about the kinesthetic movements when she composed the piece. She stated that she most definitely did. Arden stressed the importance of following the given fingerings and hand positions as this will enable the music to flow and the pianist to bring out the emotional content.

While I am excited to share this music as a potentially unique sight-reading selection, it is important to note that the therapeutic benefits of this piece culminate from playing it many times. In other words, the value of this music is far greater than just sight-reading practice.

A Review of Sight-Reading and Harmony by Dr. Cory Hall

Many pianists who regularly watch YouTube may have encountered Bach Scholar’s channel. After viewing one of his videos on sight-reading many years ago, this reviewer’s interest in sight-reading became further invigorated. Bach Scholar, whose real name is Dr. Cory Hall, has written a well-known book called Sight-Reading and Harmony to provide a comprehensive method for pianists wishing to improve their sight-reading skills. Comprised of four major divisions, Sight Reading and Harmony consists of explanatory directions, reference information, technical exercises, and Bach Chorale excerpts. The emphasis in this volume is using four-part Bach Chorales for improving vertical reading at the keyboard. In the reference section, a table of contents contains detailed indices to the German titles, the BWV catalog numbers, the key signatures, the time signatures, the composer listings, and the cadences of the Bach Chorales. These listings provide a handy guide for locating sight re...

A New Beginning

Hello everyone! It’s been quite sometime since I have posted anything on here. I sincerely apologize for that. I have had many computer issues over the past year including spotty internet access and a crashed computer, but now those issues have been resolved and it’s time to start anew. With a fresh start, I would like to provide an update on my book. When I had limited computer access, I decided I needed to make many revisions to my 200 plus page manuscript. The first change I made was to divide my book into six different levels. This will make the book much easier to manage and less overwhelming for you. The next change I made was to simplify the exercises. Many of them were too complicated with cross hands and a very wide range. I wanted the exercises to be more accessible to the reader and less intimidating from the very beginning. Sight-reading is already hard enough so it will start at the simplest level possible. Third, the book will now feature a discussion of...
